Review: The Invitation

"I think I’d like to conquer happiness next."

Blurb:

The first time I met Hudson Rothschild was at a wedding. I’d received an unexpected invitation to one of the swankiest venues in the city.

Hudson was a groomsman and quite possibly the most gorgeous man I’d ever laid eyes on. He asked me to dance, and our chemistry was off the charts.

I knew it wasn’t a good idea to get involved with him, considering the wedding I was at. But our connection was intense, and I was having a great time.

Though the fun came to a screeching halt when Hudson figured out I wasn’t who I’d said I was. You see, that unexpected invitation I received? Well, it hadn’t actually been addressed to me—it was sent to my ex-roommate who’d bounced a check for two months’ rent and moved out in the middle of the night. I figured she owed me an expensive night out, but I guess, technically, I was crashing the wedding.

Once caught, I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. As I bolted for the door, I might’ve plucked a few bottles of expensive champagne off the tables I passed, all while the gorgeous, angry groomsman was hot on my tail.

Outside, I jumped into a taxi. My heart ricocheted against my ribs as we drove down the block—but at least I’d escaped unscathed.

Or so I thought.

Until I realized I’d left my cell phone behind at the table.

Take one guess who found it?

This is the crazy story of how Hudson Rothschild and I met. But trust me, it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

REVIEW

I liked this one.

It was a sweet and funny contemporary romance with little-to-no angst and almost no drama.

Was I turning the pages like crazy and anticipating the next plot twist? No, I wasn't.

Will I reread this again at some point? I don't think I will.

But that's okay. Not every book can be an intense read, that makes your heart race, with twists and turns at every corner. Sometimes you just need a light, easy read where you can relax with a cup of coffee (which is my personal favorite) or tea and you don't really have to think about it. The Invitation was that for me.

It all starts when Stella Bardot gets an invitation in the mail for an exclusive wedding at the New York Public Library. Instead of throwing it away, her best friend Fisher convinces Stella to crash the wedding, posing as her ex-roommate.

There she meets Hudson Rothschild, the bride's brother, who quickly realizes that the woman attending his sister's wedding isn't who she said she is.

Due to a little twist of fate, Hudson and Stella's paths are destined to cross again in the near future, when Hudson's Investment company ends up being the investor in Stella's start-up business. Even though they had a rocky start they become fast friends but Stella is holding back, espacially when she realizes she's developing feelings for Hudson. Her reasonings for doing that are not valid, in my opinion. She's comparing her asshole ex to Hudson, which isn't fair to him, because they're nothing alike.

Hudson becomes infatuated with Stella rather quickly and makes his intentions clear pretty early on. I liked that he wasn't interested in playing any games. He wanted a realtionship with Stella and he was pretty straightforward about that.

I liked Stella, she was a quirky and funny perfumist (pretty cool, right?!) with an interesting hobby, which is buying and reading other people's diaries. And apparantly, that's a thing. After some Google research I found out there's really a market for written diaries... I had no idea. Consider my mind blown!

Anyway, to come back to my review... I figured out the "twist" pretty early on, so that didn't leave any surprises at all in the end. Also, I didn't like how that "twist" got resolved... I'll just leave it at that because I don't want to spoiler anyone.

I'll be completely honest... I didn't really feel the chemistry between Stella and Hudson. For me, personally, the romance between them took a bit too long to develop. There wasn't really a valid reason for that. She wasn't hung up on her ex or anything like that and the only reasoning she had for why she shouldn't start a relationship with Hudson was: What if it goes wrong... Considering she's starting a business that reason is totally illogical.

Come on! They shared their first kiss more than 60% into the book... I mean there's slow burn and then there's slooow burn...

So yeah... I'll give this book a solid 3 stars because the characters were likeable and it had some pretty funny, laugh-out-loud moments. Plus, that cover... how can you not swoon over the gorgeousness that is Nick Bateman?!

So, I'm off to read something dark and intense now. I'm ready for my next fictional Antihero love.
