Review: The Dark One

He is an unholy sight. And I will never stop sinning for him.

(Vicious Lost Boys #2)

Blurb:

“I spent most of my life feeling dead inside -- until I met Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.

It wasn't until Pan and Neverland that I finally felt alive.

But things are not all full of magic and sunlight on the island. There's something darker and more sinister haunting the forest.

And worse, the fae queen and Captain Hook are ready to fight for control of Neverland and they will stop at nothing to get what they want. Including using the one thing Pan never thought he wanted or needed -- me. I'm a descendant of the Darling family and now I belong to him and the Lost Boys.

War is brewing -- can the Never King get his shadow back and assume his rightful throne? And if he does, where will I fit?

Or will all of Neverland be in jeopardy right along with my dark, twisted heart?"

REVIEW

Because this is the second book in an ongoing series, this review will contain spoilers for Book 1 The Never King which you can get here. So, if you haven't read the first book I strongly suggest that you go and do that. It's a dark and twisted retelling of Peter Pan, full of mystery and spice, with an amazingly strong and confident heroine, who doesn't take shit from anyone, even Peter Pan and the vicious Lost Boys. You won't regret it!

Now that that's out of the way...

Oh.

My.

God.

This was so good. I mean, if you're looking for a meaningful fantasy romance, with extentive world building and character development... this isn't it. It's a very smutty retelling of Peter Pan lore, where one very headstrong and confident girl slowly starts falling for four guys.

The books aren't long at all and I devoured this in less than two hours.

So book one ends with Peter Pan finding his lost shadow, thanks to Winnie Darling and book two starts immediately where the last one left off. But once again Pan's shadow eludes him and so starts the hunt to find and reclaim what's always been his.

There are forces outside of their control, working to ensure that the Never King does not regain his full power. In the midst of all that Peter Pan finds himself caring more and more for his Darling girl. Even the mysterious and broody Vane realizes that it's getting harder to resist Winnie.

Now, what I really like about Winnie is that, since the very beginning, she has been confident and unapologetic about her sexualitiy. I can appreciate that! She knows what she wants and what she wants are Pan, Vane and the twins.

There is a bit more character development here than in the first book, but also not very significant. That's okay, though. The story progresses quite nicely and the twists just get crazier. I have read the third book at the time of writing this review and I can promise you that this series is definitely worth reading.

I love Vane! I could feel his struggle with the dark shadow he carries and the scene where he and Winnie finally come together? FIRE! He has this subtle softness but only when he's alone with Winnie and those were definitely my favourite moments in this book.

Nikki St. Crowe did a really good job of making sure that every one of the four men completes a different side of Winnie. We also got some backstory on the twins and Peter Pan that made the characters mor relatable to me.

As a Kid I was never a fan of the Peter-Pan-fairytale because i never understood why he didn't want to grow up. My kid-brain was like you're not allowed to do anything as a kid but the adult version of me really got on board with this side of Peter Pan...

So I give this book 4 stars, mostly because of Vane and the story that's getting more interesting with each book. The cliffhangers though... they're killing me.

Will definitely continue with this series!
