This was war and there were no fucking rules. No polite etiquette. Only the brutal and bloodthirsty survived.
Blurb:
“Madison Kate Danvers was murdered tonight.”
Those words changed my life, and not for the better.
They were wrong, of course. I wasn’t dead. But I was set up.
After being charged with a string of offences — and made an example of by my political minded father—I’m eventually released back into Shadow Grove with one thing on my mind.
Hate.
Someone is going to pay for derailing my carefully laid out future. Someone is going to catch the full force of my hate. How very convenient that someone just moved into the bedroom down the hall from me.
Archer D’Ath and his boys messed with the wrong chick and they’re about to learn just how cold Madison Kate’s hate can run.
REVIEW
Okay, so to start I have to say that I’ve been seeing this series so much on my tiktok that I just had to read it. Especially after all those aesthetics I saved of Archer, Kody and Steele... like daaamn my curiosity just won out. And you know what they say about curiosity... *wink wink*
Anyway, I’m currently reading book 4 in the series and it’s safe to say that I’m totally hooked.
I can’t stop reading or thinking about it, which I have to admit is a great feeling to have because I’m finally back on my normal reading schedule.
Normally, reverse harem is not really my thing because I’m more into the possessive-you’re-only-mine-kinda (anti-)hero BUT this one completely sucked me in. At first I thought about doing one review for the whole series but so much was happening in the books that I dismissed the idea. The review would be way too long.
Just a warning, though... this review might contain some minor spoilers. I’ll do my best to keep it as spoiler free as possible but it would be near impossible to write it without mentioning some things that are happening. So if you want to go into it completely blind then you should stop here.
Still with me? You’ve been warned, so let’s get into the review and my thoughts on this book.
So, book one starts with our main heroine, Madison Kate, dragging her best friend Bree to an illegal MMA fight on the wrong side of town. And things quickly escalate from there, to the point where Madison Kate gets framed for a crime she didn’t commit and gets shipped off by her father to Cambodia to her aunt.
Of course our dear heroine would never let that sit, so upon her return to Shadow Grove she plots her revenge against the three boys who framed her. Especially after she discovers that she now lives with them.
MK has a lot of hate for those boys, especially Archer D’Ath, who’s as mysterious as he is dangerous and broody. She’s relentless though and fueled by her own hate so much that she rarely stops to think and analyze certain situations. She’s always quick to blame and judge the boys on everything, just assuming shit that doesn’t even make sense when you think about it objectively.
I’m not saying that Archer, Kody and Steele are saints, which they are not by a long shot because they definitely keep a lot of secrets from her, some that even concern her but she’s very immature at times. That’s something that really annoyed the hell out of me. I was just asking for her to stop and think about what she’s about to do, instead of running into stupid situations out of stubbornness.
I mean... yeah, MK definitely didn’t have it easy in life... her father is an asshole and she has some trauma from her past but her childish behavior put me off at times.
I get that she wants revenge, I do but If I was in her place I would’ve wanted to know WHAT REALLY HAPPENED that night instead of assuming and thinking I know everything. And also... why didn’t it ever cross her mind that her father might’ve been responsible? For me that would’ve been the obvious choice, given that he didn’t lift a finger to help her after she’d been arrested. He even went so far as to make her the scapegoat PUBLICLY to wash himself clean and she never even considers him?
Instead MK places all her hate and the blame on the boys...
As the story progresses Madison Kate starts to let her guard down a bit around Steele and Kody, which I really liked. She had some beautifully vulnerable moments with them that totally saved the book for me. And some of the banter with Archer was actually hilarious... MK definitely gave as much as she got from him. The more the story progressed the more intriguing it became for me, especially because the secrets kept piling up around MK and her boys with very little actually revealed. I loved the mystery and unpredictability the most... the twists kept happening towards the end to the point where I just couldn’t put it down. I was physically and mentally unable to do so.
Also this book was labeled as dark romance, which I wouldn’t call it that. It does have some darker elements but for me it wasn’t really that dark. I mean you should read the Devil’s Night series by Penelope Douglas, that’s what I’d call a dark romance (but oh, soo good).
So, to conclude this very long review I’ll give this 3.5 stars for the reasons I mentioned above and because I would have liked for the side characters to be more developed, especially MK’s best friend Bree. All in all I’ll definitely finish this series because it does get better as the series progresses.
